DISSONANT HERITAGE
International workshop, Alto Adige IT
The program is addressed to architecture, interior design, urban planning, landscape architecture, engineering, and economics students. The workshop aims to provide the opportunity to acquire skills related to the cultural re-appropriation and architectural reconversion of a so-called 'dissonant heritage,' involving theoretical training and operational applications.
The workshop will be split into two parts, delivered online and on-site. During the online phase, theoretical and methodological lectures will be provided, together with a historical overview of the former Druso Barrack in Silandro (Bozen), which will be the object of the practical exercise. The on-site experience will offer the opportunity to develop a reuse proposal for this former military barrack, a building with a complex past in danger of demolition. Working in direct connection with the local communities, in a transdisciplinary way, and guided by an international group of experts, the proposal will deal with the Heritage Discourse connected to the past of the building; it will focus on sustainable development criteria at different scales (from urban regeneration to interior design), and hopefully will help promote a new discussion on the future of the site.
In the end, the proposals will be presented to the local communities in a public exhibition, organized in cooperation with the Architectural Foundation Alto Adige. In addition, these projects will be included in a separate issue of the Foundation's quarterly publication "Turris Babel".

Background:
The Druso Barrack is a former military area in Silandro (Italy) of approx. 4 hectares and was built in 1935-36 under the fascist regime for the national defense in the new border area of South Tyrol.
Decommissioned in 1995, it passed to the province in 2010 and was then sold to the municipality. In recent years one of the buildings of the barrack has been turned into a cultural and social activation hub called BASIS VINSCHGAU VENOSTA, a very active and progressive facility.
On October 5th, 2022, the Municipality ordered the demolition of the site for building a residential area and the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage stopped the process, putting the entire area under provisional protection for 6 months. The main building of the casern suffered massive demolition. This 6-months gap can now be used for initiatives dealing with sustainable redevelopment that respect the existing structures and allows their preservation.
